Built by Memphis, For Memphis: A Community-Created Adventure

One of the most special aspects of BVO is how deeply rooted it is in the Memphis community. From day one, this project has been “for Memphians, by Memphians.” We’re a homegrown initiative powered by local passion. Our core team includes Memphis artists, technologists, and entrepreneurs who all share a vision of making our city a hub for creativity. In fact, it’s the collaboration of artists of all disciplines – from sculptors and set builders to software developers – that will transform the old Mud Island River Museum into a fantastical world.

Community involvement goes far beyond the core team. Volunteers and supporters from around the city are literally helping build BVO from the ground up. How? Through donating time, talent, and even junk! In a fun twist, we’re constructing many parts of BVO with reclaimed materials. This sustainable approach not only keeps costs down and materials out of landfills, but it makes the community part of the story. When you walk through BVO, you might see a sculpture made of repurposed everyday objects – contributed by lifelong Memphians. Our workshops are where families and schoolkids helped create props and art pieces, giving them creative ownership in the experience.

Beyond materials, Memphians are contributing ideas and culture. The flavor of Memphis – its history, music, and diverse communities – is finding its way into the narrative and design. We’re partnering with local organizations and creators at every step. And the impact will flow back to the community. An independent report estimates BVO’s development will generate $66 million in economic activity and create more than 550 jobs in the area – from construction and fabrication roles now, to operations and tourism jobs once we open. Moreover, our mission is to be accessible and enriching: we plan outreach so that children from all neighborhoods and backgrounds can visit, ensuring those who might not typically have access to such experiences get to participate. This could mean special school field-trip programs, local resident discount days, and collaborations with community groups to use BVO as an educational playground.

BVO is a civic project and a labor of love. It’s about revitalizing a city space (Mud Island) that has great potential and giving it back to the people in a new form. Memphis Mayor Paul Young’s office even highlighted Baron Von Opperbean’s revival of Mud Island as a key piece of leveraging our riverfront’s potential. We’re proud that what we’re building not only entertains but also strengthens community bonds and civic pride. This is your adventure as much as ours. So we invite you to join hands with us. Whether you’re an artist who wants to volunteer, a local business that wants to partner, or a Memphian who simply wants to cheer us on, we welcome you! Together, we’re creating something truly magical in our city.
