Play Meets Tech: Gamification and XR at the River of Time

Play Meets Tech

BVO is a feast for the eyes and it’s the ultimate playground for the mind and body. Imagine the thrill of physical play with the engagement of a game. Adventurers will face interactive puzzles and challenges that unlock secret passages and rewards.Step inside the video game: “Gamers who dream of transforming into alternate personas to complete otherworldly missions will soon get the chance,” wrote the Daily Memphian. Our aim is to deliver that game-like rush in real life, through clever gamification of the environment.

How will we achieve this? Through a blend of imaginative design and cutting-edge technology. BVO’s tech and XR experts are integrating extended reality (XR) elements – which include augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) – into the venue. That means you might discover hidden clues revealed through AR cameras, or find yourself immersed in environments where digital elements merge naturally with the physical world, or encounter holographic characters who interact with you in the physical space. Advanced tools like projection mapping and spatial audio transform ordinary rooms into dynamic, responsive environments. Imagine a hallway that visually warps into a wormhole, or a whispering forest where the trees talk as you pass – these are the kinds of immersive tech-driven moments in store.

All this tech deepens engagement through play. “The gamification aspect is thrilling,” Kathryn Hicks notes, “Integrating core game design elements adds an extra layer of engagement not often seen in immersive experiences or themed entertainment.” At BVO, you won’t merely look at exhibits; you’ll play through them. Whether it’s decoding an ancient glyph to open a portal or assembling a gadget to activate a time machine, you’ll be actively participating. And because it’s an open-world choose-your-own-adventure, you decide which quests to undertake. Each adventurer will have a slightly different experience, finding different outcomes and Easter eggs.

Visitors exploring interactive artifacts during the first Baron Von Opperbean immersive experience (Quadrant 360), experienced firsthand the blend of play and technology that defines BVO.

We balance high-tech features with tactile, hands-on fun. In fact, a big inspiration for BVO is St. Louis’s famous City Museum – known for its endless physical play without any tech. We want you climbing, crawling, and physically exploring, not doom scrolling. Technology is used thoughtfully to add magic to the core real-world play. The result is a holistic adventure that engages all the senses. If you’ve been excited by escape rooms, VR arcades, or interactive theater, just wait until you experience all of those combined under one roof at the River of Time. Follow us for sneak peeks into the tech and game design as we build something truly one-of-a-kind. And if you’re as passionate about play as we are, consider joining our tester community or tech pirate team!
